PROTEST – Wem gehört die Straße? Feministische Sichtweisen auf Protest(formen)

Sozialproteste, also gemeinsam auf die Straße getragene Unzufriedenheit und/oder Widerspruch mit bestimmen gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen oder politischen Entscheidungen, treten gegenwärtig weltweit in verschiedensten Ausprägungen auf und tragen unterschiedlichste Forderungen mehr oder weniger laut nach außen. Ob es dabei um Forderungen nach mehr Demokratie und Menschenrechten, größerer sozialer Gleichheit, umfassenderen Klimaschutz, Corona-Politik oder Frieden geht, gemeinsames Kennzeichen ist ihr Wunsch nach Veränderung bzw. Überwindung der bestehenden Verhältnisse. Aktuelle Protestbewegungen im Iran, in China, in Südamerika, in Deutschland und dem Rest der Welt machen vor Landesgrenzen nicht Halt. Protestformen, die in vielen Teilen der Welt Zuspruch finden und dort übernommen werden, wie z.B. aktuell vor allem ökologische[1] und feministische[2] Bewegungen, versuchen weltweit Ausbeutung, Gewalt, Diskriminierung und Vernichtung zu stoppen.

Wir wollen gemeinsam erkunden, wie solche Protestformationen vor dem Hintergrund kapitalistischer Produktionsverhältnisse[3], demnach wie die Herstellung und Organisation von Gütern und Dienstleistungen in unserer Gesellschaft aufgeteilt ist, verstanden werden: Welche Proteste sind hierbei gekennzeichnet durch ein ‚zu viel gleichzeitig und zu unkoordiniert‘ oder ein ‚zu wenig und zu leise‘? Welche Rolle soll und muss Protest auf der Straße einnehmen? Welche Bedeutung spielen hierbei Institutionen wie Parlamente? Und wie müssen wiederum Proteste von rechts bzw. aus autoritären und demokratiefeindlichen Milieus verstanden werden? Bieten aktuelle Sozialproteste genug Vorstellungkraft und demokratische widerständige Energie, um den aktuellen Kriegs- und Krisensituationen eine utopistische Gegenvision, also ein Idealbild einer gerechten Gesellschaft, entgegenzusetzen? Solchen Fragen und vielen mehr bietet die kommende Veranstaltungsreihe des AK Feministische Theorien einen Raum zum Nachdenken, Nachfragen, Diskutieren und in Aktion kommen.

1.  04.04.2023 von 18-21 Uhr: Sichtbare Widerständigkeiten – Paste Ups & FLINTA* Gang Aktivismus mit Anna und Paula

Thema: In diesem bereits mehrmals durchgeführten Workshop bieten wir nicht nur eine Einführung in die Geschichte von StreetArt, Paste Ups und deren Verwendung in feministischen Kämpfen und Protesten, sondern ermutigen die Teilnehmenden auch selbst Kunst zu erstellen und so zu empowern und sich die Straße zu erobern. Aktualisiert wird der Workshop um den Einbezug der Proteste gegen Femizide durch Streetart wie zB die Rote Bank oder Paste Ups aus dem französischen Kontext.

 2.  15.04.2023 von 10-18 Uhr:  Workshop „Marx für Alle – Marx Kapitalismuskritik für Einsteiger*innen“ mit Sarah und Maria

Thema: Protest und Kapitalismuskritik sind in der Denkfigur des Klassenkampfes auf Engste miteinander verzahnt. Karl Marx’ Analyse des Kapitalismus und seine Kritik daran sind bis heute die wichtigste Grundlage für ein linkes Verständnis des herrschenden Wirtschafts- und Gesellschaftssystems und einer linken Kritik daran. Ziel des Seminars ist es, Marx’ Theorie für Einsteiger*innen verständlich und diskutierbar zu machen. Und um eine theoretische Grundlage an kapitalismuskritischem Wissen und Analysewerkzeugen für die weiteren Veranstaltungen der Protestreihe zu bieten. Dabei wird kein Vorwissen über die ökonomische Theorie von Marx oder anderen Autor*innen vorausgesetzt.

Ausgehend von verschiedenen Fragen schauen wir uns grundlegende Ideen und Konzepte von Marx’ Theorie an, unter anderem:

1. Was macht die kapitalistische Produktionsweise aus und welche Produktionsweisen
2. gibt es noch?
3. Wie wird Geld zu Kapital?
4. Welche Rolle spielen Klassen und Klassenkampf?
5. Warum sind Krisen unausweichlich im Kapitalismus?
6. Wann kommt die soziale Revolution?
7. Wie denkt Marx Kommunismus als alternative Gesellschaftsform?

Die Veranstaltung ist kein Lektüreseminar. Wir beschäftigen uns stattdessen mit dem Thema anhand von Schaubildern, Simulationen sowie kurzen Textausschnitten und diskutieren gemeinsam darüber.

 3.  20.04.2023 von 18-20 Uhr: Reading Isabell Loreys „Demokratie im Präsens“: Lesekreis zu Demokratie und Protest mit Maria

Thema: Radikale Demokratietheorien eröffnen ein pluraleres Verständnis des Politischen als herkömmliche liberaldemokratietheoretische Perspektiven. Anhand eines Artikels aus Isabell Loreys 2020 erschienenen Monographie „Demokratie im Präsens. Eine politische Theorie der Gegenwart“ wollen wir uns mit den politisch-theoretischen Implikationen eines partizipativ ausgerichteten Demokratieentwurfs beschäftigen.

Inmitten der Krisen und Bedrohungen der liberalen Demokratie entwickelt Isabell Lorey eine Demokratie im Präsens, die politische Gewissheiten ebenso aufbricht wie lineare Vorstellungen von Fortschritt und Wachstum. Mit ihrer queer/feministischen politischen Theorie formuliert sie eine grundlegende Kritik an maskulinistischen Konzepten von Volk, Repräsentation, Institution und Multitude. Und sie entfaltet einen originellen Begriff von präsentischer Demokratie, der auf Sorge und Verbundenheit, auf der Unhintergehbarkeit von Verantwortlichkeiten beruht – und ohne vergangene Kämpfe und aktuelle Praktiken sozialer Bewegungen nicht zu denken ist

 4.  23.04.2023 von 16-19 Uhr: How To Protest: Organisatorische & rechtliche Grundlagen mit Anna und Paula

Thema: In diesen Workshop sollen die Teilnehmenden an die rechtlichen und organisatorischen Grundlagen von Protesten und Demos herangeführt werden. Die Grundlagen des Workshops entstanden in Leipzig im Kontext der Proteste gegen die MoleCams auf verschiedenen linken Festivals. Durch das Teilen von Wissen können hier nicht nur nachhaltig aktivistisches Wissen geteilt werden, sondern auch Menschen dazu empowert, sich die Straße in dem Rahmen, der sich für sie sicher anfühlt zu nehmen.

Thema: Der deutsche Arbeitsmarkt hat in den letzten 30 Jahren einen tiefgreifenden Wandel durchgemacht. Prekarisierung, Arbeitslosigkeit und Abstiegsängste waren für viele Menschen die Folge. Diese Veränderung resultierten aus verschiedenen politischen Entscheidungen, die der Ideologie des Neoliberalismus folgten. In dem Vortrag wird ein Überblick über die vergangenen Ereignisse sowie die damit verbundenen Kämpfe um den Sozialstaat gegeben.

7.  27.04.2023 von 18-20 Uhr: Interaktiver Vortrag „My body my choice“ gone wrong – Feministische Sichtweisen auf Corona-Proteste mit Mayan Hartleitner

Thema: Mit Slogans wie „My Body, my Choice“ versuchten auch Besucher*innen der Corona-Proteste an vorangehende soziale Bewegungen anzuknüpfen. Wer appelliert hier an das Recht auf körperliche Selbstbestimmung und warum werden dabei trotzdem menschenverachtende Einstellungen mitgetragen? Was motiviert die Protestteilnehmenden und wieso müssen wir uns nicht nur gegen Antifeminismus wehren, sondern konkrete feministische Utopien zeichnen, wenn wir regressive Bewegungen verhindern wollen? Im Vortrag werden Ergebnisse einer Masterarbeit vorgestellt sowie Erfahrungen aus der Praxisforschung geteilt. Mayan Hartleitner war mehrjährige Mitarbeiter*in innerhalb eines Forschungsprojekts zu den Coronaprotesten bei Prof. Nachtwey in Basel.

Thema: InProtesten von Diaspora entstehen neue Zentren der sozialen Bewegung und transnationale Solidarität. Ihre aktive Rolle sowohl für den Widerstand gegen Diktatur als auch im Engagement mit antirassistischen, antikapitalistischen und postkolonialistischen Bewegungen erneuert und erweitert unser Verständnis der demokratischen Teilnahme. Anhand des Artikels Manijeh Moradians wollen wir gemeinsam über das feministische Bewusstsein der iranischen studentischen Aktivist*innen in der sechzig- und siebzigjährigen USA lesen. Wir möchten zum Beispiel diskutieren, wie die Gender- und Queer-Theorien als „methodology of possibility“ uns helfen, die historischen und aktuellen Proteste der iranischen Diaspora zu verstehen und die transnationale Solidarität bilden.

11.  11.05.2023 von 18-20 Uhr: „Stickin‘ it to the man!“ – Proteststicker als Teilhabe am öffentlichen Raummit Klara

Thema: Sticker sind als Medium für Kunst, Werbung oder Meinungsausdruck im Stadtraum allgegenwärtig. Neben ihrer dekorativen Funktion können sie aber auch eine Form des Widerstandes darstellen, zum Beispiel wenn sie Demonstrationen ankündigen, radikale oder subversive Slogans und Symbole verbreiten oder soziale Bewegungen und Protestgruppen bewerben. Auf Basis eines Artikels der Humangeographin Hannah Awcock wollen wir uns unter Rückbezug auf Themen der „Feminist City“-Veranstaltungsreihe mit der Gestaltung von urbanem Raum durch Proteststicker beschäftigen. Auf dieser theoretischen Grundlage möchten wir zum Beispiel diskutieren, wo und wie Aktivist*innen Proteststicker nutzen, wie Sticker Botschaften verbreiten und zirkulieren, und inwiefern sie eine Möglichkeit zur Teilhabe am öffentlichen Raum darstellen.

Thema: „No Pride in Police” heißt ein bekannter Slogan, der weltweit in Pride Parades zu sehen ist. Queers gehen auf die Straße, um gegen Polizeibrutalität, Diskriminierung, Racial Profiling und Willkür der staatlichen Gewalt zu protestieren.

Wir wollen gemeinsam diskutieren, wie eigentlich eine Justiz aussehen und funktionieren sollte, die LGBTQ+ Personen Gerechtigkeit und Sicherheit bietet. Was gibt es für Ideen und Konzepte? Wie können dabei die Bedürfnisse von mehrfach-diskriminierten Gruppen wie z.B. qt_BIPoC möglichst gut bedient werden? Und wie setzen wir diese Veränderungen durch – was ist dabei die Rolle von Protest?

Von Restorative Justice zu Community Policing unterhalten wir uns darüber, wie wir uns eine queer-freundliche Zukunft von Recht und Gerechtigkeit vorstellen.

Thema: Ein Film über Empowerment, Feminismus und Solidarität

BODIES WE TAKE TO THE STREETS porträtiert fünf in Berlin lebende Frauen und beleuchtet eine transnationale Perspektive auf feministische Kämpfe. Es werden verschiedene Unterdrückungsmechanismen angesprochen, die indirekt und über nationalstaatliche Grenzen hinaus miteinander verwoben und mit Themen rund um soziale Gerechtigkeit, Rassismus und dem Kampf gegen Rechts verbunden sind. BODIES WE TAKE TO THE STREETS zeigt die Vielfalt einzelner regionaler Proteste und stellt gleichzeitig aber auch die Frage nach Gemeinsamkeiten. Wie ist feministischer Widerstand mit anderen Kämpfen für soziale Gerechtigkeit verbunden? Wo können wir uns gegenseitig solidarisch verhalten und wie können wir voneinander lernen?

14.  07.07.2023 von 19-21 Uhr: Screening „Hooligan Sparrow“

Thema: Der Film zeigt den Protest und Aktion der chinesischen Aktivistin Ye Haiyan (namens Hooligan Sparrow) mit ihrer Gruppe gegen den sexuellen Missbrauch in einer Grundschule in Südchina. Sparrow ist dafür bekannt, dass sie sich seit Jahren mit provokanten Aktionen und der Öffentlichkeitswirksamkeit sozialer Medien für die Rechte von Sexarbeiter*innen einsetzt. In diesem Film mit versteckten Aufnahmegeräten und Guerillamethoden der Filmmacherin wird der Protest unter Berücksichtigung von Fragen der Klasse, Gender, sexuelle Gewalt, Medialität und der Bedeutung des Justizsystems befragt und dokumentiert. 

Nach der Vorführung des Films wird es einen Panel Talk über Feminismus und Sozialproteste in China gegeben.

PROTEST – Who owns the street? Feminist perspectives on (forms of) protest

Social protests, i.e. collective dissatisfaction and/or dissent with certain social developments or political decisions taken to the streets, are currently occurring worldwide in a wide variety of forms and are voicing a wide variety of demands more or less loudly. Whether the demands are for more democracy and human rights, greater social equality, more comprehensive climate protection, corona policies or peace, the common characteristic is their desire for change or overcoming the existing conditions. Current protest movements in Iran, China, South America, Germany and the rest of the world do not stop at national borders. Forms of protest that find approval and are adopted in many parts of the world, such as currently especially ecological[1] and feminist[2] movements, try to stop exploitation, violence, discrimination and annihilation worldwide.

We want to explore together how such protest formations are understood against the background of capitalist relations of production[3], i.e. how the production and organization of goods and services is divided in our society: Which protests are characterized here by a ‚too much at once and too uncoordinated‘ or a ‚too little and too quiet‘? What role should and must protest take on the streets? What is the role of institutions like parliaments? And how must protests from the right or from authoritarian and anti-democratic milieus be understood? Do current social protests offer enough imagination and democratic resistant energy to counter the current war and crisis situations with a utopian counter-vision, i.e. an ideal image of a just society? The upcoming series of events of the AK Feministische Theorien offers such questions and many more a space for reflection, inquiry, discussion and action.

1. 04.04.2023 from 18-21h: Visible Resistances – Paste Ups & FLINTA* Gang Activism with Anna and Paula

Topic: In this workshop, which has already been held several times, we not only offer an introduction to the history of street art, paste ups and their use in feminist struggles and protests, but also encourage participants to create art themselves and thus empower and conquer the street. The workshop will be updated to include protests against femicide through street art such as the Red Bank or Paste Ups from the French context.

2. 15.04.2023 from 10am-6pm: Workshop „Marx for All – Marx Critique of Capitalism for Beginners“ with Sarah and Maria.

Topic: Protest and critique of capitalism are closely intertwined in the figure of thought of class struggle. Karl Marx’s analysis of capitalism and his critique of it are still the most important basis for a left understanding of the prevailing economic and social system and a left critique of it. The goal of the seminar is to make Marx’s theory understandable and discussable for beginners. And to provide a theoretical basis of capitalism-critical knowledge and analytical tools for the further events of the protest series. No prior knowledge of the economic theory of Marx or other authors is assumed.

Starting with different questions, we will look at basic ideas and concepts of Marx’s theory, including:

What constitutes the capitalist mode of production and what modes of production are there?

How does money become capital?

What is the role of classes and class struggle?

Why are crises inevitable under capitalism?

When will the social revolution come?

How does Marx think of communism as an alternative form of society?

This event is not a reading seminar. Instead, we will engage with the topic using charts, simulations, as well as short text excerpts, and discuss them together.

3. 20.04.2023 from 18-20 h: Reading Isabell Lorey’s „Democracy in the Present Tense“: Reading circle on democracy and protest with Maria.

Topic: Radical theories of democracy open up a more pluralistic understanding of the political than conventional liberal democratic theoretical perspectives. Based on an article from Isabell Lorey’s 2020 monograph „Democracy in the Present. A Political Theory of the Present,“ we will consider the political-theoretical implications of a participatory conception of democracy.

Amidst the crises and threats to liberal democracy, Isabell Lorey develops a democracy in the present tense that disrupts political certainties as well as linear notions of progress and growth. With her queer/feminist political theory, she formulates a fundamental critique of masculinist concepts of the people, representation, institution, and multitude. And she unfolds an original notion of presentist democracy, based on concern and connectedness, on the inescapability of responsibilities – and unthinkable without past struggles and current practices of social movements

No prior knowledge of political theory is assumed, but an interest in reading a more complex text is required. The text will be made available in advance by email upon registration!

4. 23.04.2023 from 16-19 Uhr: How To Protest: Organizational & Legal Basics with Anna and Paula.

Topic: In this workshop the participants will be introduced to the legal and organizational basics of protests and demos. The basics of the workshop were developed in Leipzig in the context of the protests against the MoleCams at various leftist festivals. By sharing knowledge, not only can sustainable activist knowledge be shared here, but also people can be empowered to take to the streets in the framework that feels safe to them.

6. 04/25/2023 from 7pm-2pm: Lecture „Struggle for the Welfare State. An overview of the struggles of the last 30 years within the FRG“ with Lars Niggemeyer (DGB Niedersachen).

Topic: The German labor market has undergone profound changes in the last 30 years. Precarization, unemployment and fear of descent were the result for many people. This change resulted from various political decisions that followed the ideology of neoliberalism. The lecture will provide an overview of past events as well as the related struggles over the welfare state.

7. 04/27/2023 from 6-8pm: Interactive lecture „My body my choice“ gone wrong – Feminist perspectives on Corona protests with Mayan Hartleitner.

Topic: With slogans like „My Body, my Choice“ also visitors of the Corona protests tried to connect to preceding social movements. Who is appealing to the right to bodily self-determination here, and why are inhuman attitudes nevertheless supported? What motivates the protest participants and why do we not only have to defend ourselves against anti-feminism but also draw concrete feminist utopias if we want to prevent regressive movements? In the lecture, results of a master’s thesis will be presented as well as experiences from practical research will be shared. Mayan Hartleitner was a collaborator* for several years within a research project on the Corona protests with Prof. Nachtwey in Basel.

Topic: In protests of diasporas new centers of social movement and transnational solidarity emerge. Their active role both in resisting dictatorship and in engaging with anti-racist, anti-capitalist and post-colonialist movements renews and expands our understanding of democratic participation. Through Manijeh Moradian’s article, we will read together about the feminist consciousness of Iranian student activists in the sixty- and seventy-year-old United States. Topic: Stickers are ubiquitous in urban space as a medium for art, advertising or expression of opinion. In addition to their decorative function, they can also represent a form of resistance, for example, when they announce demonstrations, spread radical or subversive slogans and symbols, or advertise social movements and protest groups. Based on an article by human geographer Hannah Awcock, we want to look at the shaping of urban space through protest stickers, referring back to themes of the „Feminist City“ event series. On this theoretical basis, we would like to discuss, for example, where and how activists use protest stickers, how stickers spread and circulate messages, and to what extent they are a way to participate in public space.

Topic: „No Pride in Police“ is a well-known slogan that can be seen in Pride Parades around the world. Queers take to the streets to protest police brutality, discrimination, racial profiling and arbitrary state violence.

We want to discuss together what a justice system that provides justice and safety for LGBTQ+ people should actually look like and function like. What are the ideas and concepts? How can the needs of multi-discriminated groups like qt_BIPoC be served as best as possible in the process? And how do we enact these changes – what is the role of protest in this?

From restorative justice to community policing, we’ll talk about how we imagine a queer-friendly future of law and justice.

BODIES WE TAKE TO THE STREETS portrays five women living in Berlin and highlights a transnational perspective on feminist struggles. It addresses various mechanisms of oppression that are interwoven indirectly and across nation-state borders and linked to issues around social justice, racism, and the struggle against the right. BODIES WE TAKE TO THE STREETS shows the diversity of individual regional protests, but also poses the question of commonalities. How is feminist resistance connected to other struggles for social justice? Where can we stand in solidarity with each other and how can we learn from each other?

14. 07.07.2023 from 19-21 h: Screening „Hooligan Sparrow“.

Topic: The film shows the protest and action of the Chinese activist Ye Haiyan (named Hooligan Sparrow) with her group against sexual abuse in an elementary school in South China. Sparrow is known for using provocative actions and social media publicity to advocate for the rights of sex workers* for years. In this film using hidden recording devices and guerrilla methods by the filmmaker, the protest is interrogated and documented considering issues of class, gender, sexual violence, mediality, and the importance of the justice system.

After the screening of the film, there will be a panel talk on feminism and social protest in China.
